The Five Pillars of Islam

1. The Profession of Faith — Kalma e Shahadat

The Profession of Faith, the Shahada, is the most fundamental expression of Islamic beliefs. It simply states that “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad (PBUH) is his prophet of Allah.”

2. Daily Prayers—Salah

Salah, also called Namaz, is the second pillar of Islam and a daily obligation upon all Muslims above baligh (mature) age. Salah plays a fundamental role in the Islamic faith and in this guide, we will explore the most important facets of the second pillar of Islam, including the meaning of salah, muslims pray 5 times a day.

3. Alms-Giving—Zakaat

Zakat, the third pillar of Islam, is an obligatory act upon all qualifying Muslims and is the undertaking of submitting a set percentage of his or her profitable wealth to charity.It isn’t an optional act of generosity; it is a compulsory act that each qualifying Muslim needs to carry out annually – the giving of 2.5% of one’s profitable wealth to those in need.



4. Fasting during Ramadan—Saum

“Saum” or “Siyam” which refers to the fasting during the month of Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam. It is obligatory for all Muslims at puberty except for some cases like Sickness, children, very old peoples whose cant bear, during travel,  Menstruating Women, Pregnant Women. The holy month of Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar is a very unique month. Of course, it’s the month of when fasting obligation is fulfilled but also it’s the month when the Quran was revealed upon our beloved prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

5. Pilgrimage to Mecca—Hajj

It is a pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim must take at least once during their life. It occurs during the month of Dhul Hijja, the last month of the Islamic calendar and concludes with Eid-ul-Adha prayers.

  1. Performing Tawaf and Sa'ee in Masjid Al-Haram
  2. Staying and praying in Mina
  3. Spending the night at Mount Arafat in prayer
  4. Staying in Muzdalfah
  5. Revisiting Mina and stoning the Jamaraat (3 three devils)
  6. Performing Eid-ul-Adha prayers
  7. Performing qurbani / Udhiya, the Sunna of Ibrahim
